Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ women’s soccer plays No. 5 William Carey to 3-3 tie

JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/3/2009 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women’s soccer team posted their best finish against a team ranked in the NAIA top-10 with a 3-3 double overtime tie against No. 5 William Carey (Miss.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s record is now 5-4-2 overall, while William Carey’s season record sits at 9-1-1.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led 2-1 at the half, but let the lead slip away when William Carey posted two goals in the second half. Then, with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ trailing 3-2, Lady Bulldog junior Eboni Murphy took a breakaway and scored to tie the match with 11 seconds left in regulation.

In the two overtime periods, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and William Carey posted four and three shots respectively, but neither found the winning goal.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to the early lead with a goal from Murphy in the 15th minute of play, assisted by Bridget Rooney. Twelve minutes later, the Crusaders of William Carey tied the match with a goal from Natalia Nino. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was not finished in the first half as Jamie Haynes found the back of the net, with the assist coming from Murphy. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held that 2-1 advantage at the half.

The second half started with a quick goal from William Carey’s Jeana Erickson to tie the match again just four minutes into the second half. Then, a shot that sailed into the top of the goal from Shayna Turner gave William Carey their first lead of the match at 3-2 in the 59th minute. The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Crusaders until Murphy’s dramatic goal with 11 seconds left.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and William Carey recorded 23 shots each in the match. Laura Pla recorded 11 saves in the 110 minutes in goal, while her counterpart from William Carey, Jordan Morrison, was equal to the task with 12 saves in the same 110 minutes.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home conference match on Tuesday, October 6 versus Bethel (Tenn.) University at 5:00 p.m.
