Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Owino makes WNBA roster with Washington, season starts on June 6

NEW YORK - 6/5/2009 - Josephine Owino, former Â鶹ÊÓƵ University women’s basketball standout and two-time NAIA National Player of the Year, has earned a spot on the Washington Mystics roster in the WNBA.

After being selected 28th overall by Washington in the WNBA Draft back in April, Owino survived the numerous roster cuts during training camp to make the team. On Friday afternoon, June 5, the WNBA squads each cut their teams down to 11 players as the season opens on Saturday, June 6.

Due to cost cutting reasons, the WNBA closed down one team from the 2008 season, and also cut the roster sizes from 13 down to 11 spots for the 2009 season.

Owino and the Mystics open their season on Saturday, June 6 in a game at Connecticut at 4:00 p.m. (EST). The Mystics’ July 3 game in Atlanta will be the closest game to the Jackson area. The Mystics will also have one game, as of now, televised on ESPN 2 on July 23 versus Chicago.

Owino helped lead Â鶹ÊÓƵ to the 2009 NAIA National Title, their fourth overall and third in five seasons. She was a part of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s past three titles, including a redshirt season in 2005, and a key player in 2006 and 2009.

For Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Owino is the first player to be drafted in the WNBA Draft, and also the first player to make a WNBA roster. Several former women’s basketball players from Â鶹ÊÓƵ have had success in professional leagues overseas.
