JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/20/2009 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Lady Bulldogs and the Bethel (Tenn.) College Lady Wildcats split a double-header on Monday at Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Fesmire Field. Â鶹ÊÓƵ took the first game 4-0, while Bethel's Leah Hensley tossed a no-hitter to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 1-0 win in the second game.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ took the early lead in game one on a solo homerun by senior Ashley Blakenship. Â鶹ÊÓƵ maintained the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Ali Bozza recorded an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI single from Sydney McMillin to extend the lead. The four-run cushion was plenty for Â鶹ÊÓƵ pitcher Hailee Edwards. Edwards (11-4) tossed seven innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts in her shutout. Six Â鶹ÊÓƵ players recorded one hit each, while McMillin's two RBI and Blankenship's two runs scored led the Â鶹ÊÓƵ offense.
Game two was again dominated by pitching from both teams as the game was scoreless through three innings. Bethel scored the game's only run in the top of the fourth inning when Ashley Simmons reached on a single and scored on an Amanda Renfroe triple. Â鶹ÊÓƵ's only base runner of the game and lone scoring opportunity was in the fifth inning when Katie Davis was hit by a pitch. Brooke Laws pinch ran and ended up at third base with two outs. However, she was thrown out at home as she tried to score on a wild pitch. Hensley (14-4) tossed the seven inning no-hitter, striking out three batters and facing just one over the minimum. This week's TranSouth Pitcher of the Week, Sydney McMillin (10-8), took the hard-luck loss, allowing just the one run on six hits in her seven innings of work.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ is now 22-19 on the season and is in second place in the TranSouth with a 7-3 record with just four league games left. Bethel goes to 26-12 overall and 8-6 in league play.
Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a conference double-header on Thursday, April 23 at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) at 5:00 p.m.
