Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Campbell named TSWA Women’s College Coach of the Year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 4/15/2009 - Mark Campbell, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ University head women’s basketball coach, has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Women’s College Basketball Coach of the Year. This award comes on the heels of Campbell leading the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Lady Bulldogs to the 2009 NAIA National Championship, the third title under Campbell’s leadership and the fourth in Â鶹ÊÓƵ history.

Campbell adds this TSWA honor to his NAIA Coach of the Year, TranSouth Coach of the Year, and NAIA Coach of Character Award, each of which have been awarded to him over the past several weeks.

With Campbell at the helm, Â鶹ÊÓƵ posted a 37-1 record on their way to the national title, setting a team record with the 37 wins. The team also posted their third straight TranSouth Championship. Â鶹ÊÓƵ has now won three of the past five NAIA titles, including five straight trips to the national semifinals.

Campbell recorded his 300th career victory in a win early in the season. After 10 complete seasons, as the head coach of Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Campbell has compiled a 328-44 record. His .882 winning percentage leads all NAIA active coaches with at least five years of coaching. Campbell also boasted the first ever Â鶹ÊÓƵ women’s basketball player selected in the WNBA when Josephine Owino was selected in the third round (28th overall) this past week.

Others receiving awards from the TSWA at this time include former Memphis head coach and current Kentucky head coach, John Calipari being named the Men’s College Basketball Coach of the Year. Lester Hudson of UT Martin was named the Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, and Alysha Clark of Middle Tennessee State University was named the Women’s College Basketball Player of the year.

Campbell, Calipari, Hudson, and Clark will be officially honored on July 10 during the TSWA awards luncheon at The Hermitage in Nashville.
