JACKSON, Miss. - 4/1/2009 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldog baseball team used a one-hitter from Andrew Haley to spark a double-header sweep over Belhaven (Miss.) College. Â鶹ÊÓƵ won the first game 2-0, while taking game two, 5-2. Â鶹ÊÓƵ moved to 21-10 on the season. Belhaven, who received votes in the latest NAIA Rankings, dropped to 26-14 overall.
Andrew Haley took care of the Belhaven offense with a complete game, one-hit, shutout to push his record to 3-1 on the year. He recorded three strikeouts and two walks in his seven innings as he shut down the Blazer hitters. Â鶹ÊÓƵ managed just two runs off of Belhaven hurler Golden Grasse (2-1), who also tossed a complete game. However, those two runs proved to be enough. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored in the second inning when senior Allen Williams hit a two-RBI single to score Grant Luke and Cole McAdams. Danny Grimm led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with two hits in his three at-bats, while three other Â鶹ÊÓƵ players posted one hit apiece.
Game two provided a bit more offense, with Â鶹ÊÓƵ still coming out on top. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI hits from Corey Rudolph and Luke. Belhaven answered with a run in the bottom of the first, while Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored again in the top of the second to push the lead to 3-1. After a single run in the bottom of the fourth for Belhaven, Â鶹ÊÓƵ added insurance with a tally in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 5-2. Grimm posted two more hits in the second game, along with two hits from Rudolph and McAdams. Kevin Kirksey led the Bulldogs with two RBI. Greg Harrington (2-1) earned the win, tossing six innings of four-hit ball, allowing just two runs with four strikeouts. Brad Davis earned his first save of the season with one inning of scoreless relief in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a TranSouth Conference road series on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4 at Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
