Â鶹ÊÓƵ baseball takes road win in 11 innings

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - 2/24/2009 - The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldog baseball team earned a tough road win at William Carey (Miss.) University 7-6 in 11 innings. With the win, Â鶹ÊÓƵ improved to 7-2 on the year, while William Carey dropped to 9-5 overall.

Both Â鶹ÊÓƵ and William Carey are receiving votes in the latest NAIA baseball rankings released on Tuesday.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ added a run in the top of the 11th inning, and rode five scoreless innings of relief from sophomore Kevin Kirksey to earn the win.

William Carey scored first in the second inning with one run. Â鶹ÊÓƵ answered back with single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders of William Carey then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Â鶹ÊÓƵ posted the game's first crooked number with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, former Madison Academic High School standout Jeremy Stack left the game after six innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight batters. His replacement, Andrew Haley allowed four runs to put the Crusaders back on top, 6-4. Kirksey entered the game in the seventh and got the three outs need to stop the William Carey rally.

In the eighth inning, Â鶹ÊÓƵ rallied back to tie the game at 6-6. That score remained until Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Allen Williams slapped a one-out single to center, followed by a double by Alex Turner. After Danny Grimm was hit by a pitch, Corey Rudolph reached first on a fielder's choice when the Crusaders could not turn the inning-ending double play. Williams scored on the play to give Â鶹ÊÓƵ the lead.

Kirksey struck out two batters in the bottom of the 11th inning to preserve the win.

Huntingdon native, Cole McAdams led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with a 3-for-5 afternoon, including two RBI. Colby Starks and Josh Jones each added two hits in the game. Kirksey (1-0) earned the win, tossing five innings in relief, allowing no runs, and just two hits, with six strikeouts.

Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be a pair of home games this weekend when Â鶹ÊÓƵ hosts Huntington (Ind.) University with one game each on Friday and Saturday.
