HENDERSON, Tenn. - 2/21/2009 - The No. 1 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs won at No. 5 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University 78-65. With the win, the Lady Bulldogs move to 26-1 overall, with a 13-0 record in conference play. Freed-Hardeman falls to 22-7 on the year, 12-3 in league play.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ also clinched at least a share of the TranSouth Conference regular season title. It is their third championship in a row and 11th in the 13-year history of the league.
The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs won the tip off and scored first, but Freed-Hardeman answered quickly with a bucket of their own. The Lady Bulldogs started to build a lead, before Freed-Hardeman knotted the score up at 7-7 with just under 17 minutes left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs began to stretch their lead, going up by 10 points on two occasions. Freed-Hardeman did not back down, however, as the Lady Lions pulled back within 3 points, 33-30, with less than three minutes left in the half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ then went on a 13-3 run to close out the half, taking a 13-point advantage, 46-33, into the break.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ continued to build their lead, going up by 17 points, 51-34, just two minutes into the second half. Freed-Hardeman quickly responded with a run of their own, pulling back within seven points, 59-52, over the following six minutes. But Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ proved too be too much for the Lady Lions on this day, as they pulled away to win by a final score of 78-65.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Josephine Owino with 24 points. Merideth Jacobs added 15 points, including five three pointers. Kaitlin Dudley and Kayla Hudson each added 10 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Jana Cross with 24 points. Tara Deatheridge recorded 13 points for the Lady Lions.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs will be a home contest against No. 11 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University. The game will tip off at 6 pm, Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
