JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/18/2009 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball team swept their home opening double-header over Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University 6-5 and 8-0. With the pair of wins, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 4-2 on the season, while Christian Brothers dropped to 2-2 overall.
After rain forced Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ to play a quadruple-header on Saturday in the Belhaven (Miss.) tournament to begin their season, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ returned home for a normal softball afternoon at Fesmire Field.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ did not take long to post their first runs as the Lady Bulldogs tallied two runs in the bottom of the first. After a quiet couple of innings, Christian Brothers tied the contest at 2-2 with a pair in the top of the fourth inning. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered with a three-run homer from Sydney McMillin in the bottom of the fifth. A run in the bottom of the sixth for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ proved to be necessary as Christian Brothers rallied with two in the sixth and one in the seventh. However, Christian Brothers never took the lead and it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ who held on for the 6-5 win.
Hailee Edward (1-1) tossed five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikes outs. Bethany Burnett came in for two innings of work, allowing three runs, but earning her first save of the year. McMillin led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 2-for-3 day and four RBI. Lindsey Landreneau was 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, while Brittany Burkett also added two hits, including a homerun.
In the second game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ slapped two more homeruns, one by Katie Davis and one by Ali Thomas. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored in each of their four innings of work, including three in the bottom of the fourth. McMillin tossed five innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. Davis was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Landreneau, Michelle Albonetti, Thomas, each added two hits.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball will be a home double-header on Tuesday, February 24 versus Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College starting at 3:00 pm.
