JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/14/2009 - The No. 5 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs held off a fierce Lambuth (Tenn.) University second half rally to win 90-84. The win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (21-4) was a season-best seventh in a row. It was also the first home game for the Bulldogs since January 19.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by 21 points mid-way through the second half. However, the visiting Eagles of Lambuth took advantage of Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s cold shooting down the stretch to pull within two points, 83-81 with 58 seconds left. During that 10 minute stretch, Lambuth outscored Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ 30-11. After Youssoupha Sene converted a three-point play to get his team within two points, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Martez Hawkins was fouled on the other end. Hawkins made the first and missed the second free throw. But it was Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Roland Banhoro who grabbed the offensive board and stuck it back while being fouled. Banhoro completed his three-point play to make it a four-point possession for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, pushing their lead back to 87-81. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ sank three-of-four free throws in the final 30 seconds, while Lambuth’s Antawn Coby sank a three pointer late to set the final at 90-84.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened the game by scoring the first four points. Lambuth tied the game once early in the contest, and cut Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead to two points on three occasions. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ never trailed in the game. The Bulldogs pushed their biggest first half lead to 12 points, 31-19 with 9:20 left, before settling for a 49-41 halftime lead.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Greg Truvillion with 24 points and 15 rebounds. This was Truvillion's seventh double-double of the season and third in a row. Brian Lake also added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Both Truvillion and Lake fouled out of the game. Matt Neaville added 17 points, while Banhoro added 16 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 48-percent from the field, 40-percent (6-15) from three-point range, and 74-percent (26-35) from the free throw line. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ out-rebounded Lambuth 51 to 43 in the game, but lost the turnover battle 20-to-10.
Lambuth was led by Sene with 22 points and nine rebounds. Tom Hammonds added 18 points, Coby scored 16 points, and Keith Morris scored 10 points. Lambuth shot 37-percent from the field, 30-percent (7-23) from behind the arc, and 61-percent (19-31) from the free throw line.
