JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/14/2009 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldog baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a three-game series sweep over McKendree (Ill.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ posted a sweep in Saturday’s double-header, 9-4 in game one and 7-1 in game two. On Friday night, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the series opener 16-15.
In Saturday’s first game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Andrew Haley was perfect was perfect with two outs in the top of the second, when a fielding error extended the inning. McKendree posted four unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied back, scoring runs in each of the first five innings. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pulled away, 9-4. Haley (2-0) earned the win with five innings of work, allowing just five hits and striking out five batters. Danny Grimm, for University School of Jackson standout, led the Bulldogs with a 3-4 game including three runs scored. All eight of the remaining starters tallied exactly one hit each in the game. The offensive production was spread evenly as seven different players recorded RBI.
Game two on Saturday saw Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ again jump out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single by Grimm. The Bulldogs added four more runs in the fifth, while both teams notched a tally in the sixth inning. Jeremy Stack (1-0), a former standout at Madison Academic High School, tossed five scoreless innings in the win. David Maristany went 3-for-3 in the game, while Alex Turner, Cole McAdams, and Colby Starks each added two hits in the game. Starks posted a game-high two RBI. McAdams tossed one and one-third scoreless innings in relief for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.
In the first game of the series on Friday night, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ rallied from down 10-7 with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. However, McKendree posted five runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 15-15. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Corey Rudolph then walked to drive in the winning run. Turner, Luke, and Allen Williams each posted three hits in the game, while Luke’s three RBI led the Bulldogs. Cody Dew received the win with one-third inning of scoreless relief.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be another three-game home series next weekend versus Missouri Baptist University. Friday’s game will start at 3:00 pm, with the Saturday double-header starting at 12:00 noon at Fesmire Field.
