No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ extends conference lead with win at No. 3 Trevecca Nazarene, 80-69

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - 2/5/2009 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA for 20 straight weeks, will hold that spot for at least one more week following an 80-69 win at No. 3 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University. The win for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ also marked 29 straight TranSouth Conference regular season victories.

The game proved to be as expected when No. 1 and No. 3 get together. Eight ties and 10 lead changes occurred in the contest, including eight lead changes in the first half.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (22-1, 10-0) jumped out to a 12-8 lead, and then 15-11. However, the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (18-3, 8-2) rattled off eight straight points to lead 19-15. The Trojans eventually led by as many as five points, before Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ matched their biggest lead of the half at four points, 38-34 at the break.

In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to an eight point lead, 44-36, thanks to a 6-2 run to start the half. But the home team rallied once again to lead 49-46 with 12:39 left in the game. The lone lead for the Trojans in the second half would be short-lived as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s Kaitlin Dudley answered with a three pointer to tie the game at 49-49. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ began to slowly push the lead up to as many as 11 points, 77-66 with 43 second left to play. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held the 11-point advantage with the 80-69 final.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ boasted four players in double figures, all of which are former NAIA All-Americans. The defending NAIA Player of the Year, Josephine Owino recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kaitlin Dudley added 17 points for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, just one point shy of reaching the 1,500-point mark for her career in just her junior season. Merideth Jacobs and Kayla Hudson each added 14 points, including a combined six 3-pointers.

The nation’s top field goal shooting team posted 53-percent shooting from the field, including 38-percent (9-24) from three point range, and 62-percent (13-21) from the free throw line. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ committed 19 turnovers, compared to just 12 from Trevecca Nazarene. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ out-rebounded the Trojans 44-28.

Trevecca Nazarene was led by Jennifer Bogner with 16 points. Abby Lawson added 14 points, Christian Gibson scored 13 points, and Angelica Sails added 12 points. The Trojans shot 38-percent from the field, including 39-percent (9-23) from behind the arc, and 60-percent (12-20) from the free throw line.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be the fifth and final game of the current 5-game road swing. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ travels to Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Thursday, Feb. 12 for a 6:00 pm game.
