JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/17/2009 - The top-ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University women's basketball team continued their assault on ranked teams with a 79-50 win over No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ (17-1, 5-0) is now 9-1 on the season against teams currently ranked in the NAIA top 25, including a 4-1 record against teams in the top 10. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has won those nine games by an average of 26 points per game.
The Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman (14-5, 4-2) opened the game with the first four points. However, a jumper in the lane by Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Kayla Hudson sparked a 22-5 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ maintained the double digit lead, pushing their advantage up to as many as 22 points, 44-22 at halftime.
Look no further than the shooting numbers for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ in the first half to see fuel behind the fast start. The Lady Bulldogs shot 63-percent from the field, including 80-percent (4-5) from behind the arch in the first half. Match that against the 33-percent shooting from the field and the 0-of-7 from behind the arc for Freed-Hardeman in the first 20 minutes.
The second half started with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scoring the first five points to help stop any attempt at a second half rally from the visiting Lady Lions. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stretched their biggest lead to 37 points, leading 75-38 with 5:03 left in the game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ coasted to the 29-point victory, 79-50.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Josephine Owino with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kayla Hudson added 15 points, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Lavanda Ross added 13 points, Kaitlin Dudley scored 12 points, while Zeinab Chan grabbed 12 rebounds. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 60-percent from the field, 70-percent (7-10) from behind the arc, and 80-percent (8-10) from the free throw line.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Jana Cross with 14 points. Tara Deatheridge added 12 points, while Meribeth Boehler scored 11 points. The Lady Lions posted 32-percent shooting from the field, 14-percent (2-14) from behind the arc, and 77-percent (10-13) from the free throw line.
Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a home game on Monday, January 19 at 6:00 pm versus conference foe Blue Mountain (Miss.) College.
