No. 1 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ pulls away in win at No. 2 Vanguard, 90-75

COSTA MESA, Calif. - 11/29/2008 - The No. 1 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs used a strong second half to pull away for a 90-75 win at No. 2 Vanguard (Calif.) University. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, now 11-0 on the season, will keep the top spot in the new NAIA rankings coming out on Tuesday. Vanguard dropped to 5-1 on the season.

After knocking off No. 16 The Master’s (Calif.) College on the previous evening, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened the NAIA’s featured game to this point in the season with strong play. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped out to an early lead, holding off all attempts from Vanguard to take the lead. With 4:39 left in the first half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ had stretched their lead 12 points at 30-18. However, Vanguard quickly answered as they closed the first half with a 20-8 run to tie the game, 38-38 going into the break.

In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ again started the scoring with a three pointer from Kayla Hudson. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead remained between one and four points over the first four minutes of the second half. At that point, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ started to pull away as they slowly stretched their lead to 17 points, 86-68, with just over three minutes to play. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s biggest lead of the game was 17 points, before settling for the 90-75 win.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Josephine Owino with 28 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlin Dudley added 17 points including 3-of-6 three pointers. Lavanda Ross made three from behind the arc, helping her to 13 points. Kayla Hudson added 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three point range, while Merideth Jacobs added 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Vanguard was led by Diana Neves with 23 points, including five three pointers. Rachel Copeland added 22 points, while Lauren Gregory led with a game high 10 rebounds.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 56-percent from the field, including 54-percent (14-26) from behind the arc, and 67-percent (8-12) from the free throw line.

Vanguard posted 39-percent shooting from the field, 32-percent (10-31) from three point range, and 85-percent (11-13) from the free throw line.

Vanguard committed just four turnovers in the game, to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s 11. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the rebound battle over Vanguard, 41-33.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be their TranSouth Conference opener at home on Thursday, December 4 at 6:00 pm versus Bethel (Tenn.) College.
