Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ' men top William Carey in Thanksgiving classic

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/28/2008 - The No. 12 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to defeat William Carey (Miss.) University 87-64. With the win, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ improved to 6-1 on the season. William Carey dropped to 3-2 overall.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened the game with a basket from Brian Lake to take an early lead. William Carey answered with a three pointer by Marcus Span to take their first lead. Over the first 12 minutes of the game, the teams swapped leads on nine occasions. With eight minutes left in the first half, William Carey posted a 6-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 23-18.

The Bulldogs answered with a 12-2 run to take a five point lead at 30-25 with 4:16 left in the half. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ stretched their lead to six point by the end of the half, 39-33.

In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ opened with a 4-0 run to push their lead to 11 points. After the teams swapped baskets over the next 4 minutes, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Martez Hawkins sake a three pointer to spark a 13-6 run for the Bulldogs. William Carey cut the lead back down to seven points with eight minutes to play at 65-58. However, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ closed out the game with a 21-6 run to take the 23-point win. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 49-percent from the field, including 42-percent (13-21) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs also sank 71-percent (12-17) from the free throw line. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led by Brian Lake with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Greg Truvillion scored 20 points, Matt Neaville added 13 points, Martez Hawkins scored 11 points and Keith Tolliver finished with 10 points.

William Carey was led by Marcus Spann and Terry Wade with 13 points each. The Crusaders shot 40-percent from the field, 24-percent (4-17), and made all six of their free throws.

Up next for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will be a meeting with No. 9 McKendree (Ill.) University on Saturday, November 29 in the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Thanksgiving Classic. This will be the second meeting of the season with McKendree, as Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ won the first meeting, 83-80 in overtime at McKendree.
