Jackson, Tenn. - 9/24/2002 - Joe Phiri, a senior for the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs, was named the Student Athlete of the Week by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). This marks the second consecutive week that a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Bulldog has received this award, with Adrian Yeung getting this honor the previous week. Phiri helped lead the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ soccer squad to the co-championship of the rain shortened Casey Jones Village Classic last week. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ went 1-0 on the week and improved their overall record to 5-3-1.
Phiri, a 5-foot-7 forward from Lusaka, Zambia, leads the Bulldogs with seven goals and 17 points. He also has tallied three assists on the season. Phiri is Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s top scorer in school history with over 203 points and 56 goals in just over three and a half years.
The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs open continue their conference season on Wednesday after noon when they travel to Martin Methodist College. This begins a stretch of five straight conference games for the Bulldogs. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is currently 1-0 in the TranSouth and look to improve on last season’s runner-up finish in the conference tournament.
