JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/3/2008 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University softball team posted two wins on the final day of the being played at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's Fesmire Field. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ lost the title game 10-2 to top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene, but secures one of the league's two automatic bids to next weeks Region XI Tournament in Henderson, Tenn. by placing second to the Trojans, who won both the regular season and tournament titles.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ defeated NAIA No. 17 and the tournament's second seed Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College 4-3 in eight innings in their first game of the day. Stephanie Hernandez, who was pinch running for Ashley Blankenship, scored on a error to take the lead in the top of the eight inning. Lindsey Landreneau lead Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with three hits. Chester County native Bethany Burnett struck out 11 batters on the way to her sixth win of the season. Burnett tied a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ record earlier in the tournament with 16 strikeouts in a win over Lyon College.
Then Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ knocked of the third seed Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University 7-3 to earn a spot in the title game. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored three runs in the fifth inning and four in the seventh to pull away with the region clinching win. Michelle Albonetti led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with three hits, while Ashley Walters added two hits and two RBI. Walters also tossed a complete game for her fourth win of the season.
In the title game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ score two runs off of the TranSouth Pitcher of the Year in the first to take 2-0 lead. However, the third game of the day proved to be costly for a tired team as Trevecca Nazarene rallied back with seven runs in the first as they coasted to the five inning win. Albonetti added two hits in the loss.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Lady Bulldogs are now 35-20 on the season.
