Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ softball gets first round win behind Burnett's record 16 strikeouts

JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/30/2008 - The Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldog softball team posted a 5-4, 11 inning, win over Lyon (Ark.) College in the first round of the . Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ sophomore pitcher Bethany Burnett tossed nine innings, equalling Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's strikout mark for a game with 16 strikouts in the no-decision.

Lynde Capogreco also struckout 16 batters in 1998.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored first in the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Lyon answered in the fifth to tie the game. The score remained tied until Lyon added two runs in the ninth inning to take the lead. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ matched Lyon's two runs with an RBI triple from Amy Chatham and then a sqeeze but by Walters to score Chatham. In the tenth inning, both team added runs to make the score 4-4. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's run came on an RBI single from Michelle Albonetti. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ held Lyon scoreless in the top of the eleventh innings. In the bottom of the frame, a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third. Walters then reached safely on an error that scored Lindsey Landreneau from third.

In addition to the 16 strikeouts, Burnnett allowed three runs and 10 hits in her nine innings. Chatham tossed two innings of relief, earning her 17th win of the season.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ advances to play the top seed Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday at 5:00 pm.
