JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/23/2008 - Luke's Second Homer of the Day Lifts Â鶹ÊÓƵ in 13th Inning
The Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Bulldog baseball team finally got to play games to start of the 2008 season. After having their first seven games canceled because of the tornado that struck the campus and one more due to rain, the team opened the season with three wins on a rare three game afternoon.
In the first game, Â鶹ÊÓƵ defeated Huntington University (Ind.) 8-5 thanks to back-to-back three run innings in the bottom of the third and forth frames. Humboldt native Judson Powers led Â鶹ÊÓƵ with a 2-for-4 day with three RBI. Greg Abram posted the win, giving up five runs and seven hits over his five innings of work. Kevin Kirksey recorded his first save of the year with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three hitters.
Game two saw the Bulldog take down Missouri Baptist University 5-3. Six different players had one hit each for Â鶹ÊÓƵ, with James Brasfield posting two RBI. Carl Harken posted his first win with five innings of work, allowing just two runs and four hits. Matt Carter recorded the save with two innings of three hit and one run relief.
The night cap took as long as the first two games combined. Almost four hours after it started, Â鶹ÊÓƵ sophomore Grant Luke pulled a pitch over the left field fence to lift Â鶹ÊÓƵ to a 9-8 win in 13 innings over Huntington University. Â鶹ÊÓƵ scored seven runs in the first inning and looked to be in control. However, a seven run rally by Huntington in the top of the third tied the game at 8-8. The score remained 8-8 until Luke's homer in the bottom of the 13th inning. Powers, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the game, recorded the win in relief with one inning of work in the top of the 13th inning, allowing just one walk and striking out one hitter.
Up next for Â鶹ÊÓƵ will be home double header on Wednesday, February 27 versus Spalding University (Ky.).
