McKENZIE, Tenn. - 1/5/2008 - The No. 1 ranked Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-0 on the season and 1-0 in TranSouth play with an 83-75 win at Bethel College (Tenn.). After a 22-day layoff, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ continued their stretch of 33 wins in their past 35 games dating back to January 11 of last season. Bethel dropped to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The game started with Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldog senior Crystal Eason draining two straight three pointers to put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up 6-0. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ would not trail in the contest and continued to push the lead in the first half thanks to 8-of-14 shooting from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took their biggest lead of the game at the 5:49 mark on a three pointer made by Merideth Jacobs to put Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ up 35-18. However, playing at home, Bethel proved to be tough opponent for the full 40 minutes. The Lady Wildcats cut the lead to just four points (35-31) with 2:48 left in the first half with a 13-0 run. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered back to take a 43-35 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ jumped back out to a big lead at 50-37, but once again, Bethel responded. With 8:59 remaining in the game, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead was just 61-60, but the Lady Wildcats could not get any closer. With just over a minute left to play, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµâ€™s lead was back to 11 points at 81-70. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ earned the win, 83-75.
Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was led in scoring with three players posting 16 points, including senior guard Eason who had her high school jersey retired by Scotts Hill on Friday night. Kayla Hudson and Josephine Owino also posted 16 points. Jacobs added 12 points and Kaitlin Dudley scored 11 points. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ shot 43-percent from the field including 45-percent (10-22) from behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs made 13-of-20 (65%) free throws which was well below their NAIA No. 8 ranked 75-percent.
Bethel was led by Nina Djokovic with 17 points. Jelena Budimir added 14 points and 11 rebounds, with Jenna Roney scoring 10 points. The Lady Wildcats shot 50-percent from the field, but just 15-percent (2-13) from three point range. Bethel made 3-of-4 free throws (75%).
