Unoin Men Hold On For Win at McKendree

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/17/2007 - The No. 19 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ University Bulldogs held on for a win on the road, 92-85, versus No. 23 McKendree University (Ill.) in the final game of the McKendree Classic. The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the season, while the McKendree Bearcats fell to 4-2 this year.

The Bulldogs played well in the first half, scoring 47 points on 42-percent shooting from the floor, including 41-percent from three-point range (9-22). Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ took at 47-46 lead into halftime.

In a game that saw the two teams swapping baskets at either end of the floor, the second half progressed like the first, with the lead changing hands numerous times. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ added 45 points to their first half total, shooting 43-percent in the second half. To seal up the victory, in the final minutes of the game, the Bulldogs went on a 13-3 run to pull away for their second win in as many days. With the victory, the Bulldogs became the 2007 McKendree Classic champions.

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ was lead in scoring by Matt Neaville with a season-high 36 points, including eight three-pointers. Brian Lake put up 22 points, and Tony Brown added 12. Ryan Merriman dominated the boards for the Bulldogs pulling down a career-high 19 rebounds in the game.

McKendree’s Eric Palm led the Bearcats in scoring with 32 points on the night. Brad Copelin put 18 points, while Eric Hobbie and Ken Detmer added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Neaville, Lake, and Brown were named to the All-Classic team. Neaville, who leads the NAIA in scoring and three-pointers made per game, was also named Most Valuable Player of the McKendree Classic.

The Bulldogs will be back at home for the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Thanksgiving Classic November 23-24, at Fred Delay Gymnasium. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will play William Carey University (Miss.) Friday night at 8:00 pm. Then on Saturday night, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ will face McKendree for the second time in eight days, also at 8:00 pm.
