No. 1 Â鶹ÊÓƵ Rolls in Season Opener

JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/3/2007 - The No. 1 ranked Â鶹ÊÓƵ University Lady Bulldogs opened their season with an 87-52 win over Harris-Stowe State College (Mo.), who received votes in the NAIA preseason poll. With the win the Lady Bulldogs start the 2007-08 season 1-0, while the Harris-Stowe Hornets drop to 0-1 on the season.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game with a field goal by Josephine Owino, but Harris-Stowe quickly answered with a field goal of their own by Sheena Moore to tie the game 2-2. That tie proved to be the closest that Harris-Stowe would get as the Lady Bulldogs continued to build on the lead, going up by as many as 24 points in the first half. Â鶹ÊÓƵ took a 47-26 lead into halftime.

At the start of the second half, the Lady Bulldogs picked up right where they left off scoring first. Harris-Stowe pulled to within 21 on a field goal made by Carmen Weaver with 18:35 left on the clock. However, the Lady Bulldogs quickly scored again and moved their lead to a game-high 37 points. Â鶹ÊÓƵ cruised in to their first victory of the season, 87-52.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ boasted four players scoring in double figures on the night. Merideth Richardson Jacobs and Josephine Owino each put up 18 points, while Crystal Eason and Zeinab Chan posted 13 each. Chan also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, to start her Â鶹ÊÓƵ career with a double-double.

Harris-Stowe’s Keyuana Bradshaw scored 13 points to lead the Hornets.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Lady Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend November 9-10 in the Lambuth Classic. Â鶹ÊÓƵ will face No. 21 Columbia College (Mo.) first on Friday evening at 6:00 pm. The Lady Bulldogs play again on Saturday versus No. 18 West Virginia University Tech at 2:00 pm. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s next home game will be in the Rotary Classic, November 15-17.
