Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Sweeps Cumberland in First Conference Series

The No. 7 Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ Lady Bulldogs sweep the Lady Bulldogs of Cumberland University 5-0 and 5-4 to start the 2003 TranSouth Conference season. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ is now 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Cumberland falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the league play.

In game one, Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ scored three runs in the first and added one in each the fourth and sixth innings. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's five runs came on seven hits and one Cumberland error. Leah Gronberg for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ moved to 3-1 on the season allowing just two hits over seven innings. Gronberg struck out seven batters and walked only one. Holly Haycraft led Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a 2-for-4 day. Amy Mejia, Christina Johnson, and Crystal Surgalski each recorded an RBI in the game.

Game two was a little closer. Cumberland struck first with a run in the top of the fourth. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the four, then three in sixth. Cumberland rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to just one, but would get no closer. Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ's freshman pitcher, Mary Kosco earned the win to move to 4-0 on the season. Crystal Surgalski win 1-for-3 in the game with two RBI, a triple, and a run scored.
