Before Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ: Barnes played four seasons of baseball at Bolivar Central High School for Coach Mark Fulghum as an outfielder and catcher. He also played four seasons of football at Bolivar as a wide receiver and linebacker. In baseball, he helped lead his team to a district title in 2007, followed by region and sectional titles in 2008. Barnes was a three-time All-District and All-Tournament player, twice named All-West Tennessee, and was named District MVP as a senior in 2008. As a senior, Barnes hit .452 with 45 runs, 16 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 29 RBI. He recorded only six strikeouts in his 124 at-bats. Barnes also participated in the first annual West Tennessee All-Star Baseball Classic in which he was selected Offensive MVP.
